New Year, New Goals (Eco Resolutions for 2022)

January 22, 2022 / thebetterplanetproject / 3 Comments

It’s a brand new year, so it’s time to set some goals I’ll probably forget about by mid-February. Just kidding...I hope! Last year’s goals got a little derailed since some of them were dependent on buying a house. Although I did achieve this, it happened a lot later in the year than planned, so … Continue reading New Year, New Goals (Eco Resolutions for 2022)

8 Reasons to Start Composting

October 26, 2020 / thebetterplanetproject / 6 Comments

Growing up, my family didn’t compost, and I didn’t know anyone who did. Trash went in the trashcan, and recyclables went in the recycling bin. That was it. In fact, it was a long time before I learned what composting was, and why it’s so important. Now that I’m a composting convert, it genuinely blows … Continue reading 8 Reasons to Start Composting

How to Compost Indoors, in an Apartment

October 5, 2020October 26, 2020 / thebetterplanetproject / 9 Comments

I can’t compost because… I live in an apartment. I don’t have a backyard/garden. I have a phobia of worms. It will make my house stink. It will attract pests. It requires buying too much equipment. Have you ever said or thought any of these things? I once believed every one of these to be … Continue reading How to Compost Indoors, in an Apartment

How to Grow Microgreens Indoors

August 25, 2020August 25, 2020 / thebetterplanetproject / 2 Comments

One day I will live in a house with a beautiful garden where I will grow my own fruits and vegetables, but until that day comes, I won’t let living in small, one bedroom apartment stop me from gardening. I may not be able to grow watermelon or pumpkins, but I can grow herbs, green … Continue reading How to Grow Microgreens Indoors

Ready for Easter with lots of fresh eggs from our girls! 🐓 I was thinking of dyeing some with natural ingredients, but 1) it seemed like too much work after spending several hours deep-cleaning the coop (there was SO MUCH poop!😳), and 2) I think they look pretty as is! 🥚🍳
I was fortunate enough to spend some time in Costa Rica recently for work, and I was amazed by all the examples of sustainability in action. From the luggage belts at the airport that were run on renewable energy, to the carbon negative coffee farm I visited, to the collection of plastic lids at the beach, destined to be transformed into benches and pathways, the focus on the environment was everywhere. Maybe it’s harder not to be threatened by climate change when you live in a country of immense beauty, biodiversity, and vulnerability. Whatever the reason, I’m certainly feeling more inspired to continue making changes in my own life to protect the planet. 🌏🌺🦎
Happy Caturday! I’m just back from a week visiting my sister in sunny California, and the cats definitely missed us! Trying to fit in some quality time with them in between catching up on work and cleaning up the house. What are you up to today?
All stocked (stacked?) up on zero waste bulk goods from my favorite local grocery store @goodearthindy. I got granola, mung beans (for sprouting), chocolate-covered almonds, black beans, brown rice flour, and oats. 😋
I love the gingham on this thrifted top, but the original sleeves were a little too poofy for my taste (swipe to see the “before”). I thought about ripping out the seam on the bell sleeves and re-sewing them to make it a little closer-fitting. Flash forward a few months, and the shirt was still sitting in my closet, unaltered and unworn. So I decided to take the lazy way out and cut off the bottom layer of fabric—no sewing required! I love it so much now, and it’s easier to layer a sweater!
I’m so stoked that I can finally refill my own containers with cleaning products locally! I just stocked up on all-purpose cleaner, dish soap, laundry detergent pods, and dishwasher detergent pods, all with zero waste! Thank you @onatahgeneral!
