Good, Clean Home

November 21, 2017 / thebetterplanetproject / Leave a comment

You know how all those cleaning products in your house say things like "danger, keep away from children" and "if ingested call poison control immediately!"? If these products are actually dangerous, then why on earth are we rubbing them all over every surface of our homes? *Scratches head.* Organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) … Continue reading Good, Clean Home

The Incredible, Edible CSA, Round 2

November 9, 2017 / thebetterplanetproject / 1 Comment

It's round two of the incredible, edible farm share box! If you missed round one, check it out here. Basically, a crop box or CSA (community-supported agriculture) box, is a share of fresh, local, produce that I receive every other week. It supports my local community, reduces the emissions caused by transporting food over long … Continue reading The Incredible, Edible CSA, Round 2

The Incredible, Edible CSA

October 19, 2017October 31, 2017 / thebetterplanetproject / 2 Comments

I recently signed up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share, and last week I received my first box of produce. If you're not familiar with CSA programs, they are an amazing way to get fresh, locally grown produce, dairy, meat, and other goods. It's healthy, convenient, and supports my local community, so honestly I … Continue reading The Incredible, Edible CSA

It’s repotting day for Johann Sebastian Bachia, my dieffenbachia plant. He’s one of my oldest surviving plants and was overdue for a roomier home! I used a homemade aloe vera fertilizer to help ease the transition. I’m hoping he’ll be much happier with more space to spread out! Swipe to see the “before.”🪴💕
I don’t really know how to post my usual, sustainability-related content when seemingly every day, I wake up to more news of gun violence, including both mass shootings and the state-sanctioned murder of black people at the hands of police. This time, 8 people were killed in the city I call home. A country in which events like this happen all the time is a country in which the rule of law is fundamentally flawed. And yet conservatives are more concerned with preventing people from exercising their constitutional right to vote than they are with preventing senseless violence and the deaths of innocent people.
I had a beautiful weekend spending time outdoors (when it wasn’t raining). It felt so good to unplug for a few days and enjoy the fresh air and flowers. 🌷
I don’t know why it has taken me so long to try sprouting beans/legumes at home, but I think this is going to be a regular thing now! Thank you thank you @zerowastechef and @thefarminmyflat for the inspiration! I started with lentils since I happened to have a big jar from the bulk store, and after 3 days, they’ve quadrupled in size, and they have some nice little tails to show off! Can’t wait to try them! 😋
I’m excited to try out @dropps laundry and dishwasher pods for the first time! Lucky for me, I was able to buy them locally from the refill bar at @onatahgeneral for zero waste laundry and dish washing! I used to use the powder detergent that comes in a cardboard box. These use significantly less plastic than the liquid detergent sold in bottles, but most still have some plastic as part of the package, such as a plastic handle and/or scoop. By switching to Dropps from the refill bar, there isn’t even a box to recycle! 🙌 #smallwins
Bulk sections like this one make me happy!
